Two years ago when I started collecting everything that Carol Sloane had recorded, I never imagined I'd be in a position to help compile her discography. It is no secret that Carol has been my favorite singer for over a dozen years and I already owned as many Sloane CDs but it wasn't until I joined Songbirds, at Carol's suggestion after we "met" on another list, that I became aware of the existence of all those marvelous Japanese recordings and more; and so began the search to find all of Carol Sloane's recorded material. In the process, I became fascinated, confused and frustrated by just how many different issues of some of the recordings exist, both in the US and Japan. Since some of the CDs eluded me, I settled for LPs and started enjoying my turntable again. And when I learned that some of Carol's recordings had never appeared on CD, I was even happier to have those LPs with their large, beautiful and sometimes mystifying covers so I kept on collecting them even when I already had the CDs. Sophisticated Lady alone has been issued with three different LP covers. With the exception of Carol's very first record and a couple of the earliest Japanese CDs, I have all recordings listed should there be a question about a specific issue.

When Carol began working on her website, she asked if I might supply her with a list of my holdings to help update her discography as my collection appeared to be the most complete and as such, might contain recordings that she was either not aware of (such as the most recent and numerous compilations) or might not own herself. Coincidentally, soon after I sent her the list, Steve Albin asked on Songbirds about a Carol Sloane discography and expressed an interest in compiling one using his computer program. So I contacted him and we started work, offering it to Carol for her website when it was ready.

Anyone who has undertaken a job such as this knows it is a time consuming enterprise. But both Steve and I felt that a singer of Ms. Sloane's caliber with such a long and prolific recording career deserved and needed to have this information assembled in a public place as a reference for interested parties, as other discographies were neither complete nor up-to-date. Carol has been a great help in supplying missing information and putting us in touch with others who might help with details about places and dates for early recording sessions. We'd like to thank Carol Sloane, as well as Ralph Patt, Jim Gavin and Keizo Takada for answering our questions. Also, a special thanks to Gary Shivers whose website provided an invaluable reference for the basic information used in the discography. And Carol, I hope you are as proud of this discography as we are of your vast output of beautiful recordings.
